Dr Priyanka's skin care tips

Simple Steps for your Daily Skincare:

FACE WASH:

Use a suitable facewash after consulting your dermatologist. A facewash should be used twice daily to cleanse your face. Excessive washing of face dries your skin.

MOISTURISER:

An appropriate moisturizer must be applied all over the face immediately within 5 minutes of facewash. Moisturizer acts as a protective barrier for your skin so it should be the first layer on your skin before using any other cosmetics over your face.

SUNSCREEN:

A sunscreen is necessary to protect your skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiations present in the sunlight. However, the best sun protection is mechanical barrier, for example, umbrella, scarf, sun coat, hat etc.

A sunscreen cream/lotion/gel must be chosen as per your skin type and applied every 3-4 hourly between 10 AM to 4 PM. It must be applied 10 minutes after the application of a moisturizer and 20 minutes before going into the sun exposure. SPF 30-50 are effective for Indian skin type.

CORRECTIVE CREAMS:

If you are using any corrective creams for pigmentation /acne/ wrinkles, they must be used at night after application of the moisturizer.

SECRET FOR HAPPY & HEALTHY SKIN:

The best way to have beautiful skin is to have a positive attitude, healthy diet & exercise regime, avoid smoking & excessive sun exposure and keep smiling!

Skin care in Covid 19 pandemic

Covid 19 pandemic has changed the way we live forever. Though it has been a very stressful period for all of us, it brought some good changes such as spending time with our family, reducing air and noise pollution, avoiding overcrowding and frequent handwashing. Frequent hand washing and sanitizing has not only helped us to protect from Covid 19 but also many other illnesses that we used to get because of unhygienic hands.

However frequent hand washing is causing loss of skin protective barrier and leading allergic contact dermatitis, eczema, fissures over hands. Though we have to continue this protective measure against Covid 19 for a long time to come, we need to prevent allergies by maintaining the moisture in the skin of hands by frequent application of a good paraben free moisturizer.

Coconut oil is a good moisturizer readily available at home. If you have developed any red itchy patches on your hands or other body parts due to frequent sanitizing, please visit us at LiveYoung Skin and Hair clinic for proper treatment and guidance for preventing occurrence of allergy again in the future.

Other common skin and hair changes that are occurring frequently during this pandemic are eruptions on face due to mask, hair fall, dry skin. Visit us or contact us for online consultation at LiveYoung Skin & Hair Clinic for right treatment and counselling.

Vitiligo treatment-Excimer laser

Vitiligo:

Vitiligo or leucoderma or white spots disease is not a medical disorder but a cosmetic problem but it has a great impact on the affected person’s psychological and social well-being. It occurs in 1-3% of the population. In vitiligo, there are areas where the normal pigmentation of skin is missing or deficient due to destruction of melanocytes, the colour producing cells of our skin.

The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, the research has concluded that it is an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys certain cells within the body, in this case, the melanocytes. It may or may not be hereditary.

It can occur as early as in the first year of life or in 60s or 70s of life. It can present as a single spot and may increase to involve almost all of the body surface area. There is no scientifically proven method to prevent vitiligo and avoidance of particular foods has no role in prevention or treatment of vitiligo.

At LiveYoung Skin and Hair Clinic, we offer different modalities of treatment depending on patient’s age, area of involvement, stability of the disease. Dr Priyanka has treated hundreds of cases of vitiligo over the years with great success rate and thorough counselling of the patients with realistic outcomes and prognosis.

The treatment options are:

Medications:

Oral and topical medications are required to control the spread of the size and number of the patches and also help in achieving some repigmentation.

Excimer laser:

This is the latest and most effective treatment available for vitiligo. It is 308nm excimer laser which gives targeted exposure of the laser rays to the vitiligo patch and stimulates the repigmentation process faster compared to other modes of treatment.

Phototherapy:

UVA and UVB therapies have been used successfully to achieve pigmentation in vitiligo patches.

Vitiligo surgery:

Mini Punch grafting surgery, slit skin grafting surgery, melanocyte culture transplantation are the surgical options for vitiligo patches which have been stable and have not shown response to other modalities.

PRP - Hair & Face

Platelet Rich Plasma:

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is derived from our blood which contains active growth factors. It can stimulate hair growth and collagen formation in our skin layers. When this platelet rich plasma is injected at hair roots, it provides growth factors in concentrated forms required for activation of hair follicle leading to healthy hair growth and reduction in hair fall. It’s a completely safe procedure in which growth factors are separated from patient’s own blood, thus has no side effects. It’s effective for both male and female hair loss and thinning.

It is injected into the scalp or areas to be treated using a special micro needle along with application of numbing cream so it’s a comfortable procedure. It can be used as a single therapy or in combination with hair transplant surgery to promote hair growth, depending on the severity of hair fall and area of hair loss. The sessions are done every 2-4 weeks interval depending on severity of hair fall. The results are usually seen within 3 – 6 months. Patients may require 4-6 sessions for adequate hair growth.

PRP has become popular method for skin rejuvenation and tightening as well. The micro nutrients and growth factors in PRP also stimulate collagen formation in our skin layers when injected at the level of dermis. The newly formed collagen gives lift and tightening to the skin, improving the texture and fine lines. The sessions are performed every 4-6 weeks, allowing the time required for new collagen formation.

At LiveYoung Skin and Hair clinic, PRP and modified PRP treatments are available for hair restoration and face rejuvenation. It’s a safe, effective, well tolerated procedure.

Skin Allergies:

In today’s world skin and other allergies have evolved as lifestyle disorders due to pollution, contamination and stress. You can be allergic to certain substances by birth or develop allergy to them over the years. Allergies have become common in all age groups. It is a response of one’s own body immune system to agents like dust, metal, fibres, chemicals, pollen grains, different foods, medicines. These agents also known as allergens are not harmful, occur freely in environment and do not bother most people they come in contact with. Some common allergens are foods, cosmetics, fragrances, plantations, sun light, dust. When an allergen comes in contact with an individual with allergy, it triggers an allergic reaction. One can be allergic to one or multiple allergens at the same time.

What is allergy?

The human immune system is programmed to fight any foreign substance (allergen, infectious agents) entering our body. In this process, the immune system produces a number of antibodies and activates blood cells called eosinophils. Sometimes the chemicals produced in this process by body cause symptoms of allergy. These symptoms can be sneezing, runny nose, watering and itching of eyes, hives, rash, swelling of lips & face, breathlessness, attack of asthma. Common allergic disorders are:

Healthy nails are smooth, without pits or grooves, uniform in texture and colour. Different festivals come in different seasons. The rituals that were followed traditionally in festivals were in relevance with the effects of weather on our skin and overall health. Oral intake of dry fruits, ghee, jaggery, rice made snacks, pulses made snacks provided us with essential amino acid, proteins for replenishing our skin.

However, with our lives stuck to the clocks and loaded with numerous responsibilities, we don’t have the time to perform these skin care rituals anymore.

At LiveYoung Skin and Hair Clinic, for glowing, supple skin, we can offer you our hydra-medifacials, serum infusions, laser services and peels for pigmentation, acne, uneven skin tone.
